BioWare Is Closing: What It Means for Mass Effect Fans
EA is shutting BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect. Fans have a 76,000+ signature petition. What happened and what it means for you.
I didn't expect to write this one. EA is shutting down BioWare, the Edmonton studio that gave us Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the original Baldur's Gate, and it's taking the next Mass Effect down with it. BioWare said so itself on October 21. Two days on, fans are signing petitions and talking boycott.
What happened
EA's internal memo, covered by Polygon and Reuters, says the company is shutting the Edmonton studio and narrowing its focus to fewer, proven franchises like Apex Legends, Battlefield and its sports games. Work continues on Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game. Bloomberg, citing a source familiar with the plans, puts the cuts at about 400 jobs across EA, around 3% of staff, with roughly 50 of them at BioWare.
This is also EA's first big shake-up since it went private in a $55 billion deal (about ₹4.6 lakh crore) led by Saudi Arabia's PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, which closed in August.
Fans are furious. There's a petition on Change.org asking EA to sell the series or let another studio finish Mass Effect 5, and IGN counted more than 76,500 signatures when it checked. Over on Reddit, people rallying under #savemasseffect say they won't buy anything from EA again. A full trailer for the dead game has also leaked, IGN says, which honestly just rubs it in. (IGN's post on X is where I first caught the boycott angle.)
Why it matters
BioWare basically defined the Western story RPG for a generation. Losing the studio and the next Mass Effect in one go is a big signal about what a privately owned EA wants: safe live-service hits over long, risky single-player projects. The Mass Effect name doesn't vanish, though. EA still owns it, so the series could come back someday with a different team. Whether a petition changes anything is another matter, and IGN notes analysts and former BioWare bosses don't think EA will budge.
What to do
If you already own Mass Effect Legendary Edition or the Dragon Age games, they're still in your library. Nothing I read from BioWare or EA mentions pulling existing games from sale. If you want your voice counted, the petition is on Change.org under "savemasseffect". Just know it's a long shot. EA isn't the only big publisher shaking things up right now, either. Microsoft just lost Xbox's first COO after three months.
