Acer's biggest gaming handheld finally has a US price and date, and it's not cheap. The Predator Atlas 8 goes on sale on November 1 for $1,300, which is roughly ₹1.23 lakh at current exchange rates, though Acer hasn't announced an Indian launch.

What happened

Acer showed the Atlas 8 back in May, but it never said whether the handheld would reach the US or what it would cost. Now Engadget reports, citing Best Buy's listing, that it will be a Best Buy exclusive in the US starting November 1. The Verge also confirmed the date and price on X.

Only one configuration is coming, and it's the faster one. That model uses the Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip with Arc B390 graphics and 12 Xe3 GPU cores, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 512GB SSD. The screen is an 8-inch 120Hz IPS panel rated at 500 nits. You also get TMR joysticks, dual-mode triggers, a UHS-II microSD slot, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. It runs Windows 11, so Game Pass and your Steam library work as they would on a laptop.

It's Acer's first gaming handheld to officially go on sale in the US. The smaller 7-inch Predator Atlas 7, shown last month with the same chip, has no US plans yet.

Why it matters

$1,300 puts the Atlas 8 well above most PC handhelds, so I expected Best Buy to have a hard time selling it. Apparently not. Best Buy says the first round of pre-orders sold out right away, and it plans another round of online orders on launch day, when units also reach stores.

That tells you something about where this category is heading. People clearly want a bigger screen and more GPU headroom than the original Steam Deck class of devices offered, and they'll pay laptop money for it. It also matters for Intel, which needs wins for its Arc graphics in handhelds, a space AMD has mostly owned so far.

What to do

  • If you're in the US and set on one, check Best Buy's site on the morning of November 1, since the first batch went fast.
  • Wait for independent reviews before paying launch price. Battery life and how loud the fans get under load aren't covered by the spec sheet.
  • Outside the US, there's no official date or price yet, so watch Acer's local site rather than paying an import markup.

If you mostly play older or lighter games, a cheaper handheld will probably make you just as happy. The Atlas 8 is for people who want desktop-class games on the couch and don't mind paying for it.
