Xbox's first ever chief operating officer is already gone. Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft, roughly three months after she was handed the job, according to an internal memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma that The Verge reported on October 23. I spotted it through The Verge's post on X, and IGN has the story as well.

What happened

The memo is short. Sharma writes that Chiang "is leaving Microsoft today," thanks her for her years of service, and says the company will "share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized." Until then, Chiang's work is being split up among other Xbox leaders. No reason was given for the exit.

Chiang isn't some outside hire who didn't fit. She spent 21 years at Microsoft and ran Minecraft and Mojang before being promoted in July. The COO role was new, created as part of the Xbox shake-up, and came with end-to-end profit and loss responsibility across content, hardware, platform and services. That's a huge remit, which makes walking away from it after one quarter stand out even more.

Why it matters

This is happening while Xbox is in the middle of a painful reset. IGN notes that around 3,200 Xbox jobs are expected to go this year, and that Arkane Lyon, the studio making Marvel's Blade, could close by mid-November if nobody buys it. Losing the person put in charge of running the whole business day to day, so soon, doesn't exactly scream stability.

My honest read: it's hard to say much more until Microsoft names a replacement or explains the plan. A brand-new role being reshuffled this quickly could mean the structure itself is being rethought, not just the person in it. That's my guess, though, not something the memo says.

What to do

For players there's nothing to do right now. Your games, Game Pass subscription and Xbox account aren't affected by an executive leaving, and Microsoft hasn't announced any product changes alongside this.

If you follow the business side, the next thing to watch is who takes the COO seat, or whether the job quietly disappears. And since Chiang came from Minecraft, a lot of people will wonder about that game too. There's no sign of any change there. If you play it with friends, my guide to hosting a Minecraft server behind CGNAT still works exactly as before.
