Apple just gave the iPad mini its first real redesign in years, and the headline is the screen. The new model has an 8.5-inch OLED panel, Apple's A20 Pro chip and an IP67 rating, which makes it the first iPad that can actually survive a dunk. 9to5Mac had the spec rundown on X within minutes of the announcement.

What happened

Apple announced the tablet on October 26 in a Newsroom press release it titled "biggest update ever." The main changes:

  • Display: 8.5-inch OLED, up from 8.3 inches thanks to thinner bezels, with up to 1,200 nits peak brightness and an optional nano-texture finish on the 256GB and 512GB models.
  • Body: 5.4 mm thick and 255 g for the Wi-Fi model, down from 6.3 mm and 297 g, with IP67 water and dust resistance.
  • Chip: A20 Pro on a 2nm process. Apple claims up to 4.5x faster AI work and up to 2.7x faster graphics.
  • Cameras: the 12MP front camera moves to the landscape edge, and the rear 12MP camera shoots 4K at 60fps.
  • Connectivity: Apple's N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, plus the C2 modem on cellular models.

Pre-orders open October 28 and it ships November 6. The Wi-Fi model starts at $699 in the US and ₹82,900 in India, and cellular starts at $849 / ₹1,00,900, according to Apple and Gadgets 360.

Why it matters

The mini has always been the iPad people love and Apple seems to forget about. An OLED screen plus real water resistance turns it into a proper e-reader, note-taker and travel tablet, not just a smaller iPad Air.

I do have two complaints, though. One: 9to5Mac points out that neither the press release nor the spec sheet mentions ProMotion, so it looks like a 60Hz screen. For $699 that feels stingy. Two: only the 512GB model gets the 6-core CPU and the dual Neural Engine. The 128GB and 256GB versions have a 5-core CPU and a single 16-core Neural Engine, so "A20 Pro" doesn't mean the same chip across the range.

It's also a big jump in price, especially in India, where the base model costs more than many flagship phones.

What to do

  • If you own the A17 Pro mini and mainly read and browse, I'd wait for reviews of the screen. Without 120Hz, the upgrade is mostly about OLED contrast and the slimmer body.
  • If you're still on an older mini with a Lightning port, this is the one to get.
  • If on-device AI or heavy apps matter to you, look hard at the 512GB model. It's the only one with the full chip.
  • Students in India can buy through Apple's education store from ₹76,900.
