Some iPhone Duo Inner Screens Are Cracking
A handful of iPhone Duo owners say the inner screen cracked along the hinge on its own. What we know, what Apple has said, and what to do.
So, the iPhone Duo. People got theirs on Friday, and by Sunday a handful of owners were already posting photos of a cracked inner screen. They swear they didn't drop it. And weirdly, the cracks all look the same.
What happened
9to5Mac counted roughly ten unique cases so far, a lot of them on the iPhone Duo subreddit. The crack runs right down the hinge line, then a strip of pixels across the screen goes stuck-white. Two or so people say it broke before they'd even finished setting the phone up. That's rough.
Nobody outside Apple knows the cause yet. One theory doing the rounds is that a batch of units has a slightly misaligned hinge part that presses up against the back of the inner panel. Others have suggested you shouldn't close the phone by pushing on the middle of the screen, but that's speculation, and Apple hasn't published any handling advice. 9to5Mac says it has asked Apple for comment. As of Sunday evening IST I haven't seen a reply.
The good news is that most people who bought from an Apple Store seem to be getting a straight swap. Carrier buyers have had a rougher time, partly because stores don't have spare stock, and one owner says they were told the crack was drop damage they'd have to pay for.
Why it matters
Ten reports against what's likely hundreds of thousands of phones is a tiny number, and every big launch gets a wave of scary photos. So I wouldn't call this a recall-level problem. Still, the sameness of the failure is what caught my eye. Random drops don't usually crack a screen in exactly the same spot with the same white bar, which is why people are pointing at the hardware rather than the owners.
It also matters because this is Apple's first foldable, and one that starts at $1,999 (₹2,99,900 in India). Hinge and crease durability are the one thing buyers have been nervous about since the rumours started, and first impressions stick.
What to do
- If you've just bought one, keep the box and receipt, and note when your return window ends. Return rules differ by country and by seller, so check yours.
- Open and close it gently from the edges, not by pressing the middle of the inner display. It might not matter, but it costs you nothing.
- If yours cracks without a drop, take it to an Apple Store or authorised service centre first rather than the carrier, and say it happened during normal use.
- Thinking of buying? Waiting a week or two for Apple to respond, or for a clearer picture of how many units are affected, is a reasonable call.
If you missed it, I went through what Apple's own support pages say about the iPhone Duo at launch, which covers the hinge and display basics.
