A few days ago I covered reports of iPhone Duo inner screens cracking. iFixit has now taken one apart, and its teardown points to a few places in the hinge where the trouble might start. I caught it through 9to5Mac's post on X and then went through iFixit's full write-up.

What happened

iFixit gave the Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, the best it has handed any foldable, according to 9to5Mac and The Verge. It's provisional because replacement parts aren't on sale yet.

On the cracked screens, iFixit didn't find a smoking gun. What it did was build a 3D model of the hinge from CT scans, teardown footage and Apple's patents, then line it up with owners' photos of damaged units. The breaks tend to sit in the same area: just below where the cable linking the two halves crosses the hinge, where several edges meet and the support under the display changes. One scenario iFixit simulated has the centre support bar not dropping far enough as the phone closes, so the folded screen comes down on it and creates a small stress hotspot.

The team was clear these are leads, not a verdict. Apple hadn't commented to The Verge at the time of its report.

Why it matters

Repair costs are the scary part. iFixit says out-of-warranty inner screen damage costs $999 in the US. The good news is that the matte nano-texture top layer can be replaced on its own, for $49 without AppleCare or $19 with it. These are US prices, and repair pricing varies by country, so check Apple's support site where you live.

There's real praise in the teardown too. Both batteries (7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh) use adhesive that lets go when you run current through it, a big plus for anyone swapping a worn battery later. The outer screen and the trim around the inner screen come off without breaking. But test dust still reached the hinge and made it crunch, so pocket grit remains a foldable problem.

What to do

  • If you own a Duo, open and close it gently, and stop if the hinge feels tight or you hear a pop.
  • If you see a bright line or a crack, contact Apple while you're in warranty. iFixit says Apple is replacing units for now.
  • Think about AppleCare. With a $999 screen bill on the table, it costs less to cover the phone than to fix it.
  • Keep the phone out of sandy or dusty pockets.
  • Thinking of buying one? Waiting a few weeks for Apple's response wouldn't hurt.

I'll follow up if Apple confirms a cause or changes its repair policy.
