Techland's CEO says Dying Light: The Beast is complete with no substantial new content planned, and its five-year support model fell short.

Dying Light: The Beast just had its first birthday, and it turns out that was its last big moment. Techland's boss told fans there's nothing substantial coming for it anymore. I came across it through an IGN post on X. The quotes come from a Discord AMA, which Insider Gaming reported first.

What happened

Techland founder and CEO Paweł Marchewka hosted an AMA in the official Dying Light Discord. When someone asked about a roadmap for The Beast, he said the game is complete and that players should think of it the way they think of the first Dying Light today. In his words, Techland is "not planning substantial new content for it."

The Beast launched in September 2025. It started life as an expansion for Dying Light 2 and grew into a standalone game. Since then it's had free updates, the biggest being Restored Land, a mode where you clear the zombies out of the map and bring the region back to life. Marchewka pointed out that Techland never promised long-term support for The Beast, even though it kept adding content.

He went further than that. He said "the five-year support model hasn't worked as well for us as we hoped," and that keeping old games going with small teams gets in the way of new projects. He also said players often expect frequent, large updates, usually for free. That part didn't go over well with the Discord crowd.

Dying Light 2 isn't being dropped. Marchewka said support continues past its fifth anniversary in February, but Techland hasn't decided how much.

Why it matters

Honestly, this one surprised me. Techland is the studio that kept patching the first Dying Light for years after launch, long after most games would've been left alone, and that's a big part of why fans stuck with it. So when the CEO says that model didn't pay off, that's not a small thing to hear. It's been a bumpy stretch for them too: the fantasy RPG got cancelled last year, and the PS4 and Xbox One versions of The Beast were scrapped this year.

Is it bad news for players? Not really. Nobody's shutting servers off or pulling content. The Beast you can play today is just the Beast you'll be playing next year.

What to do

  • Been holding off for some "final version"? You've got it. Nothing big is coming, so buy it on sale whenever it suits you.
  • If you already own it and skipped Restored Land, go play it, because it's the last major addition.
  • Don't buy The Beast expecting seasonal events or a roadmap. Treat it as a finished single-player game.
  • Dying Light 2 players can keep expecting updates, though nobody knows how big they'll be after February.

It's a very different approach from CD Projekt, which is still adding to Cyberpunk years later. I wrote about that in my post on Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5.
