Messages you post in Discord's biggest public servers could start turning up in Google results from mid-December. Discord announced the change on October 27, and the opt-out switches are already live, so now is the time to decide whether you want your words out there.

What happened

According to Discord's blog post, every Discoverable Server gets a public Server Web Page from November 16, 2026. Discoverable Servers are the open ones anyone can join without an invite. They need at least 1,000 members and must be at least eight weeks old, and Discord says there are more than 63,000 of them.

From November 16 those pages can show automated summaries of what people are discussing in public channels. Then, from mid-December, some actual messages from those channels can appear on the pages and in web search, word for word. Discord says usernames and avatars won't be shown, and anything posted before mid-December isn't included. Private servers, DMs and group DMs aren't affected.

The defaults depend on where you live. In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, the member setting is off unless you switch it on. Everywhere else it's on unless you turn it off. Teen accounts are excluded entirely, as Engadget also noted.

Why it matters

Discord's pitch is fair. A lot of game help and fandom knowledge that used to live on forums is now buried in chat channels Google can't see. Making that searchable could make Discord a bit like Reddit in search results.

But people joined those servers expecting chat, not publishing. Even without your name attached, a message can identify you if it mentions your job, your city or something only you would say. And if you leave the setting on, messages you post while it's on stay up unless you delete them, even after you switch it off later.

What to do

  • Members: open User Settings, then Data and Privacy, and turn off Channel Messages. One switch covers every Discoverable Server you're in.
  • Server admins: go to Server Settings, then Web Presence, to choose which channels take part or opt them all out before November 16.
  • Watch for the new labels. Discord says channels whose messages can appear on the web will be marked before you post.
  • Outside those six regions, assume it's switched on until you check.

It's the second big "opt out before it starts" change I've covered lately, after Google letting Gmail data shape ads. Worth a two-minute settings check.
