ChatGPT Now Works With iCloud Mail and Calendar
OpenAI adds iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins to ChatGPT on every plan. How the app-specific password setup works and what to think about first.
ChatGPT can now read your iCloud Mail and work with your iCloud Calendar. OpenAI switched on two new plugins on October 27, and they're free on every ChatGPT plan. If you live in Apple's email and calendar rather than Google's, this is the first time ChatGPT has been able to see any of it.
What happened
OpenAI announced the plugins in a post from the official ChatGPT account. You can ask it to find an old email, catch you up on your inbox, tell you what's next on your schedule or move a calendar event. They work in ChatGPT on the web, on the desktop app and on iOS. OpenAI didn't mention Android.
Setup is a bit old-school. You don't sign in with a fancy OAuth button. Instead you create an app-specific password for your Apple Account and paste that in, the same way you'd hook iCloud Mail up to Thunderbird or Outlook. 9to5Mac later confirmed that ChatGPT's Dots agents can use both plugins too, and Engadget notes that Dots are tied to the Pro plan.
One catch worth knowing: these plugins only see iCloud. If your Mac's Mail app also pulls in a Gmail or Outlook inbox, ChatGPT won't touch those through this route. You'd need the separate Gmail or Outlook connectors for that.
Why it matters
Gmail and Google Calendar have worked with ChatGPT for a while, so iCloud users were left out. That's a big group, since plenty of iPhone owners never bother with a Google account for mail. Now they get the same "summarise my inbox" and "book this for Tuesday" tricks.
It's also a slightly odd moment for it. Apple went with Google's Gemini for its new Siri and sued OpenAI over trade secrets earlier this year, yet here's OpenAI building a proper bridge into Apple's services. Neither company seems ready to walk away from the other.
The privacy trade-off is the real thing to think about. An app-specific password gives ChatGPT broad access to that mailbox, not one folder. That's fine for a lot of people, but I wouldn't connect a mailbox full of bank and medical mail without thinking it through first.
What to do
- Want it? Make an app-specific password at account.apple.com (two-factor authentication has to be on), then add the iCloud Mail or Calendar plugin in ChatGPT.
- Label the password something like "ChatGPT" so you can find it later. Revoking it there cuts ChatGPT off straight away.
- Start with Calendar only if you're unsure. It's far less sensitive than your whole inbox.
- If you'd rather keep AI away from your data altogether, running a model locally in LM Studio keeps everything on your own PC.
