Windows 11 26H2: Should You Update? (25H2 vs 26H2)
Windows 11 26H2 is a small enablement package that resets your support clock to October 2028. What changes, known issues and how to update.
Updated October 2026. Dates, builds and known issues checked against Microsoft's release information and release health pages on 22 October 2026.
Short answer: yes, update to Windows 11 26H2, and if you're still on 24H2 Home or Pro, do it soon. 24H2 Home and Pro stopped getting security updates on 13 October 2026. 26H2 is a small enablement package with one restart, and it gives Home and Pro PCs updates until 10 October 2028. If you're on 25H2 you can relax a bit, because 25H2 is covered until 12 October 2027, but there's very little reason to wait.
The bigger question most people actually have is "what am I getting?" Honestly, not much you'll notice on day one. Here's why, and what I'd check before clicking the button.

25H2 vs 26H2: what actually changes
Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same core files. Microsoft's own support note for the enablement package, KB5121794, says the 26H2 features already sit on 24H2 and 25H2 PCs through monthly updates, in "an inactive and dormant state", and the enablement package is the switch that turns them on.
So if your PC has been taking monthly updates all year, you already have most of the code. A lot of the headline features, like the resized Start menu, the taskbar you can move to the top or sides, and Search that lets you turn off web results, began rolling out to 24H2 and 25H2 PCs through monthly updates before 26H2 shipped. Microsoft rolls these out gradually, so two PCs on the same version can still look slightly different.
What 26H2 really changes:
- The support clock. This is the big one. A new version number means a fresh 24 months of updates for Home and Pro (36 for Enterprise and Education).
- Features flipped on. Things like the Settings agent, more Start and taskbar options, File Explorer changes and better Search previews move from "maybe" to "on for eligible PCs".
- Work PC defaults. On managed business PCs, 26H2 turns on a few features that were held back by default, including Windows settings backup and app actions from the taskbar.
If you were hoping for a redesign, this isn't it. I'd think of 26H2 as a support extension with some features attached.
Support dates for every current version
These come straight from Microsoft's Windows 11 release information page.
| Version | Build | Released | Updates end (Home/Pro) | Updates end (Enterprise/Education) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26H2 | 26300 | 29 Sep 2026 | 10 Oct 2028 | 9 Oct 2029 |
| 26H1 | 28000 | 10 Feb 2026 | 14 Mar 2028 | 13 Mar 2029 |
| 25H2 | 26200 | 30 Sep 2025 | 12 Oct 2027 | 10 Oct 2028 |
| 24H2 | 26100 | 1 Oct 2024 | Ended (13 Oct 2026) | 12 Oct 2027 |
| 23H2 | 22631 | 31 Oct 2023 | Ended | 10 Nov 2026 |
One oddity: 26H1. It only exists on certain new PCs that launched in early 2026, it runs on a different core (build 28000), and Microsoft says it isn't offered as an update to existing 24H2 or 25H2 machines. If your laptop shipped with 26H1, you won't be offered 26H2 at all, and that's expected.
Known issues in 26H2 right now
I always read the 26H2 release health page before updating anything. As of 21 October 2026, here's what Microsoft lists:
- Apps using AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio closing unexpectedly. This came from the 22 September preview update and was fixed by the 13 October update (KB5127648). Mostly older apps and some games were hit.
- Black screen after sign-in on some virtual desktops. Mainly Azure Virtual Desktop with FSLogix. Also fixed by KB5127648.
- Remote Desktop error 0xC000000D for non-admin users connecting to PCs with Administrator protection turned on. This one's mitigated, not fixed. It's a business PC problem, not a home one.
- Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices failing with Code 10 in Device Manager or no sound. Also listed as mitigated. Note it's not unique to 26H2; the same entry lists 25H2, 24H2 and even Windows 10.
The point worth noticing: because these versions share code, the same bugs usually hit 24H2 and 25H2 too. Staying on 25H2 doesn't really protect you. Staying on the latest monthly update does.
How to update to Windows 11 26H2
Microsoft says the phased rollout has reached full availability for 24H2 and 25H2 PCs, so most people will just see it in Windows Update.
Step 1: Check which version you're on
Press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. A build starting with 26100 is 24H2, 26200 is 25H2, and 26300 means you're already on 26H2. You can also look in Settings > System > About under Windows specifications.
Step 2: Install the latest monthly update first
The enablement package needs the 22 September 2026 update (KB5124010) or something newer already installed. Go to Settings > Windows Update, click Check for updates, and install whatever cumulative update is waiting. I'd go straight to the 13 October update, since it fixes the AC-3 audio bug.
Step 3: Back up anything you'd hate to lose
The update is small, but a backup costs you ten minutes. Copy your Documents, Desktop and Pictures folders to an external drive or cloud storage. If you use BitLocker, make sure you know where your BitLocker recovery key is before any big update.
Step 4: Download and install 26H2
Back in Settings > Windows Update, you should see "Windows 11, version 26H2" with a Download & install button. Click it, let it finish, and restart once. If it isn't there yet, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available on the same page and check again.
Step 5: Confirm it worked
Run winver again. You should see Version 26H2 and an OS build starting with 26300.
If the update itself gets stuck at some percentage, that's a general Windows Update problem, not a 26H2 one. I've written up the fixes for Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%.
Who should wait
For most home PCs I wouldn't wait at all. A few exceptions:
- You rely on an old USB audio interface or DAC. Check the USB Audio Class 1.0 issue first. That said, the same issue is listed for 25H2, so updating isn't really what triggers it.
- Work-managed PCs. Leave it to your IT team. They control the timing and may have policies around Administrator protection.
- You're on 25H2 and in the middle of something important, like exams or a deadline. You've got until October 2027, so there's no harm in waiting a week or two.
If you're on 24H2 Home or Pro, though, I'd stop waiting. You're past the end of updates, and the fix is one restart.
Still on Windows 10? That's a different decision. My post on Windows 10 updates extended to October 2027 covers your options, including what a Windows 11 licence costs (Home is $139 / ₹10,379 on the Microsoft Store).
And if you've already installed 26H2 and spotted something that changed for the better or worse, tell me in the comments. I'll keep this post updated as Microsoft clears the known issues.
FAQ
Is Windows 11 26H2 free?
Yes. It's a free update for any PC already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. It comes through Windows Update like any other update.
How big is the 26H2 update?
Very small if you're on 24H2 or 25H2 and up to date, because it's only an enablement package. It needs one restart. A clean install from a 26H2 ISO is a full multi-gigabyte download.
Should I update from 25H2 to 26H2?
Yes, eventually. 25H2 Home and Pro get updates until 12 October 2027, so there's no rush, but 26H2 gives you support until October 2028 and the bugs are mostly shared between versions anyway.
Why don't I see 26H2 in Windows Update?
Usually because the monthly prerequisite update isn't installed yet, or Microsoft has a safeguard hold on your hardware. Install the latest cumulative update first. If your PC shipped with 26H1, it won't get 26H2 at all.
Does 26H2 work on unsupported PCs?
Microsoft doesn't support Windows 11 on hardware that fails the system requirements, and that doesn't change with 26H2. If you bypassed the checks to install Windows 11, updates aren't guaranteed.
