Microsoft is offering a large slice of its workforce money to leave. The company calls it a Voluntary Exit Offer, and reports say around 60,000 employees are eligible, including staff in India. [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/26/microsoft-offers-buyouts-to-around-60000-employees-reports-say/?ref=blog.harshkohli.com) picked it up from earlier reports by Business Insider and Bloomberg.

## What happened

On October 26, Microsoft's chief people officer Amy Coleman sent the offer to employees and [posted an edited version on the official Microsoft blog](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/10/26/introducing-a-voluntary-exit-offer/?ref=blog.harshkohli.com). Here's what Microsoft itself confirmed:

- It's open to eligible employees at level 70 and below, in participating teams only.
- It covers Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- It's time-limited, and people who accept get financial support and career planning help.
- Some organizations are offering it and some aren't, depending on their priorities and customer commitments.

Microsoft's post doesn't give a headcount. The figure of around 60,000 comes from the reports TechCrunch cited, which also say staff in data centers, sales and marketing are excluded and that the package looks a lot like standard severance. Earlier this year, Microsoft ran a buyout for retirement-age staff, and TechCrunch says more than 30% of the roughly 8,750 people eligible took it.

## Why it matters

A buyout is gentler than a layoff, but the goal is similar: a smaller, differently shaped company. And the timing is hard to ignore: it lands right before Microsoft reports quarterly earnings this week.

India is one of the four countries on the list, so this reaches well beyond Redmond. Microsoft runs big engineering centers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and offers like this tend to push more experienced engineers into the job market at once.

The fact that a company this profitable is paying people to go says a lot about where big tech is spending. The money is going to data centers and AI, not headcount.

## What to do

- If you work at Microsoft, check your email. Coleman's note says eligible employees should get an email with details within hours.
- Don't rush the decision. Compare the package with your unvested stock, notice period and, in India, gratuity and how your exit is documented for future background checks.
- If you're hiring, expect more senior Microsoft talent looking around in the next few months.

Microsoft has seen plenty of leadership churn this year too. I wrote earlier about [Xbox's COO Helen Chiang leaving](https://blog.harshkohli.com/xbox-coo-helen-chiang-leaves/).
