- Description: Etsy now requires an unedited photo on every listing and bans AI-generated patterns, recipes and bot listings. What changes for buyers and sellers.

Etsy just tightened its rules on AI in a way that will change how a lot of listings look. If you buy handmade stuff online, or sell it, this one's worth a couple of minutes. I've read Etsy's own announcement so you don't have to.

## What happened

On 22 October 2026, Etsy published ["Important updates to AI use on Etsy"](https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/1522733284810?ref=blog.harshkohli.com) in its Seller Handbook. The company says many buyers can't tell which items involve AI-generated content, and sellers are worried about their work sitting next to listings that use AI in misleading ways. [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1017261/etsy-ai-rules-policies-restrictions-listing?ref=blog.harshkohli.com) and [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/22/etsy-bans-ai-generated-recipes-patterns-from-its-online-marketplace.html?ref=blog.harshkohli.com) covered it the same day.

Here are the main changes, in plain terms:

- Every listing needs at least one completely unedited photo of the real item against a real background. Etsy says some exceptions apply depending on the item type.
- All photos have to show what the buyer will actually get. You can still use editing tools, AI included, for lighting, colour, cropping or backgrounds on the other photos, as long as you don't hide flaws or change how the item looks.
- AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions are banned. The guide has to be your own work, and you have to show a real result made with it.
- Listings made entirely by bots with no human involvement will be removed, and the shop itself can be taken down.
- If a listing breaks the image rules and the buyer gets something "materially different", the seller may have to refund them.

AI-made art isn't banned. Etsy's existing policy says sellers must disclose AI use and can't pass it off as handmade.

## Why it matters

Anyone who has scrolled Etsy recently has seen the problem: plush toys and prints that look too perfect, then arrive looking nothing like the photo. AI image tools made it cheap to fake inventory, and that hurts honest makers most, wherever they sell from. Etsy's buyers and sellers are spread across the world, so this sets a fairly strict bar for a big marketplace.

I think the recipe and pattern ban is the most important part. A bad AI crochet pattern doesn't just disappoint, it wastes hours and real yarn before you notice it's wrong. Etsy is also adding AI-image warnings in the listing form, better detection, and a new "misleading AI imagery" option when you report an item.

## What to do

If you sell on Etsy, go through your listings now. Make sure each one has a plain, untouched photo of the real product, and ideally put it first, as Etsy recommends. If you edited other photos with AI, say so in the description. Pattern and recipe sellers should add photos of a finished piece you actually made.

If you're a buyer, look for that unedited photo before ordering, and use the new report option if something looks generated. If an item turns up very different from the pictures, open a case, because the new rules back you up.
